What happens when we listen to other times while standing in places we can see with our own eyes?

Heldenplatz is a site of political power, public memory, and historical projection. In this project, it is approached not as a monument, but as an audible space—a square where different eras overlap and resonate with one another.

Heldenplatz creates acoustic trails woven into the physical environment. As visitors move across the square, they encounter voices, scenes, sounds, and atmospheres. Some traces lead into the year 1848: a time of revolution, hunger, surveillance, upheaval, and the brief dream of a new social order. Others open onto the year 2084, a possible future in which artificial intelligence has assumed governmental functions and personal AI assistants accompany every individual.

The square itself remains visibly present. Visitors see Vienna, the Hofburg, and the openness of the surrounding space. Yet through listening, another dimension emerges. There, voices speak from the margins and centers of 1848—people who may have lived, worked, struggled, or been excluded around the imperial court. Their stories remind us that freedom, the rule of law, and democratic participation are not abstract ideals but hard-won possibilities.

The future layer of 2084 pushes these questions further. Heldenplatz is now known as the Square of Free Thought. It is the last place where personal AI assistants no longer function. What appears to be freedom is simultaneously experiment, exception, and trap. Humans and machines move through this space while an unresolved question lingers: how much control are people willing to surrender in exchange for security, convenience, and certainty?

The result is an acoustic thought experiment.

Heldenplatz becomes a place where revolution and algorithms, civil rights and data governance, emancipation and adaptation intersect. Past and future mirror one another, revealing how recurring questions continue to shape public life.

Visitors decide for themselves which voices to approach. Distant sound sources remain in the background, while nearby voices emerge with greater clarity. The experience unfolds as a form of exploration rather than a predetermined narrative. Nothing dictates what must be heard. Instead, the square reveals itself as an open field of possibilities.

Heldenplatz asks what continues to resonate from past struggles in the present—and what kind of future emerges when freedom is not abolished, but quietly redefined through comfort, convenience, and consent.
