The Augarten Porcelain Manufactory is anything but silent.

Although porcelain is often associated with refinement, form, and fragile elegance, it embodies an entire world of labor, material, craftsmanship, history, and society.

Augarten AR begins with a simple but far-reaching question:

What becomes audible when we stop merely looking at objects and begin listening to the life of a place?

Inside the museum, visitors enter a sound world that can only be experienced on site.

Using museum-provided devices, they move through a walkable sound installation whose sonic textures are created entirely from porcelain. Delicate ringing, scraping, tapping, shimmering, and resonating sounds transform the museum into an acoustic landscape. A material that is usually observed visually begins to shape the space through sound.

Alongside this sound environment, selected objects tell their own stories. As visitors approach an exhibit, its narrative begins. Moving away pauses the story; returning later resumes it exactly where it left off. The result is a form of interpretation that follows the natural rhythm of a museum visit: looking, listening, moving on, returning, and discovering something anew.

Attention remains focused on the original objects. Visitors do not need to constantly interact with a screen. The space itself becomes the guide.

Outside the museum, a second layer unfolds.

Through a freely accessible mobile app, the grounds of the manufactory become an acoustic journey through time. Current employees speak about their daily work. Former workers recall earlier eras of production. Historical figures step into the present. Empress Leopoldina reflects on her fate in Brazil. An emperor tends the gardens. An ensemble performs Strauss while people dance in a circle and visitors find themselves at the center of the scene. In a nearby café, conversations reveal everyday life and social customs.

Rather than presenting history as a single narrative, Augarten AR creates a polyphonic portrait of a place. Labor, memory, imperial history, music, migration, daily life, and cultural representation intertwine. This diversity is what gives the project its strength. The manufactory emerges not merely as a producer of beautiful objects, but as a social, historical, and acoustic organism.

Particularly important are the voices that museums often leave unheard: the voices of the people who work—or once worked—there. They give the institution a different kind of depth. Not as explanatory commentary from the outside, but as lived experience rooted in production, material, daily routines, and the evolving history of the manufactory.
